Harry Glenn's Mar-Vel, Glenn & H And K Labels
![]() |
From a farm boy in Bald Knob, Indiana, to a success as a record man, the story of Harry Glenn is like a Horatio Alger tale. Harry's road to success was finding destitute artists whose music he understood and selling their records out of the back of his Rambler as he traveled from one radio station to the next. He even had a loudspeaker mounted on the Rambler so he could broadcast his songs as he drove down the road. Of course, Glenn is best known as guiding light behind Mar-Vel Records, a label that fostered an exploding rockabilly and country music scene in the Hammond, Indiana area. Hammond was the ideal breeding ground - a steel town across the state line from Chicago, Illinois, with a large working class population of Southern whites. From 1949 to the mid-1960's Glenn released over 140 recordings - all in his off hours from his job as a welder. Mar-Vel's artists like Jack Bradshaw, Bob Burton, Chuck Dallis, Bobby Sisco, Billy Hall and Shorty Ashford may not sound like a who's who of country music but they made some great music! Below is over 130 of the records that Harry and his wonderful artists have left behind for us. |
